The challenges facing the African Diaspora in the West are broad and multi-faceted, ranging from economic to political to historical, and many others in between. Importantly these challenges are heavily interconnected, often exacerbating the results of any individual problem. Romantic Fiction
This fictional romance explores the tumultuous love story of Jason and Alice, two star-crossed lovers from different worlds. Jason is a young, MI6 computing professional of Caribbean heritage, born and raised in London. Jason is struggling to come to terms with his unwitting preference for White women, and the societal and cultural implications that brings in a world increasingly divided by race. A dating app leads Jason to serendipitously stumble across Alice; a good-natured, but slightly naive nurse, who has moved to the city from the countryside. The pair fall for one another, beginning their journey amid a backdrop of growing racial tension in the city; tension triggered by a recent act of police brutality that is shrouded in a plot of governmental conspiracy.
Alice feels like fate has finally smiled upon her after meeting Jason, who appears to be her dream man. However, as they spend more time together, the complexities of interracial dating present hurdles for the pair to overcome. In addition to their own individual journeys of reflection, interrogation and discovery; they have to manage the challenging input from: friends, family, exes and modern day societal pressures, as they try to determine if what they have is worth fighting for.
As the story builds, pressure increases on our couple from all angles. A pro-Black political activist group (Ancestral Descent – AD), call on Jason to demonstrate his commitment to his people, as revelations of Alice’s infidelity and subterfuge come to light. Meanwhile Alice struggles to escape a persistent ex, while being compelled to interrogate what it means to be in an interracial relationship in the 21st century; a time where colour-blindness is no longer a strategy and where there is a growing necessity to tackle racial issues head on - is she ready to do what it takes for love? Will they make it?
Following multiple challenges, run-ins with the law, bigoted family, friends and those who do not believe the world can change - the pair choose each other.
